Crazy times. A week ago, I attended a 3-days fingerpainter meeting in Hamburg, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe. We participated in the Stylectrical exhibition, collaborated, shared tips, even led a "student" workshop !

*damn, am I to teach ipad art to that 30 years old art teacher ?*

Jonathan Grauel, Fabric Lenny, Kara Jansson, Luis Peso, Joseandrés Guijarro, Simone Kirschning, Gabriel Palacios, Thierry Schiel, John Bavaro, Gautier Coudor and Benjamin Rabe were there. The latter hosted us for an evening in his studio. A pretty nice one, with BLANK walls. I don't remember who made the first stroke, but after a minute we were ten to paint on it, with pencils, markers, brushes, fingers. Until 2am, we covered it and the pavement outdoor. Without a doubt one of the most awesome thing I ever experienced !

Tribute to Chris Riddell (BIC on paper) - View it hi-res !

Chris Riddell est certainement l'artiste traditionnel que je préfère. Il est mondialement connu pour ses illustrations de livres jeunesse, mais aussi pour ses cartoon hebdomadaires dans le journal The Observer.

Chris Riddell is probably my favorite traditional artist. He's famous worldwide for his amazing ink books-for-children illustrations, but also for his weekly cartoon in the Observer newspaper. A most inspiring artist !

That first mouse is my reply to an open call for digital breakfast related artwork. If I'm lucky it will be part of a cafe based exhibition which will run alongside a series of artist residencies in Armley, Leeds, as part of the "ilovewestleeds" Festival. Again, thanks for Fabric Lenny, who shared the opportunity !

Cette première souris est ma réponse à un appel à des "hommages au petit-déjeuner". Si cette pièce est sélectionnée, elle fera partie des 30 dessins exposés à Armley (Leeds, UK) lors du festival "ilovewestleeds". Merci encore à Fabric Lenny qui a partagé cette opportunité !

Pour lequel Paul a imaginé:

Precisely when Stanislaw had blacked out was not clear to him, but he sensed he was now waking into one of the old nightmares. Like when he was in the clinic and they were drugging his porridge.

From somewhere close by, in the dead tones of a hostage imprisoned in an interminable loop, a vaguely familiar voice was repeating the refrain: “Good evening, this is the news. You can’t box up emotion.” Cold-sweating, Stanislaw looked around him. His cartons had morphed into battered TV sets with screens striving primordially to burst into life, and hellish green swamp vapours were rising from the floorless depths of the Box Chamber. He shuddered.

The voice suddenly dissolved into eerie laughter that caused Stanislaw to start. The bad psychiatrist! Terrified now, he looked up, but the face on the screen was not the one he so feared. It belonged to a wild-eyed macaque which, as it caught his eye, broke off its cackling and enquired facetiously: “How you gonna cope wi’ life as a dwarf penguin, man? You got yourself a cool box wi’ fish?”

Without warning, but just as the good psychiatrist had once predicted it would, the office erupted in a cacophony of noise: glass shattering as words long repressed burst screeching through the screens and broke into a thousand fragmented letters, an escaped Fear Bird squawking in bewildered terror, a beach-hatted figure –whom Stanislaw recognised immediately as his old enemy Sub –baseball batting scarred nursery tunes off the violin he had once loved.

“You locked us away, punk! You locked us away!”

The voice was disconcertingly close, startlingly familiar. Stanislaw turned and gasped in horror, not so much at the sight of the pistol protruding from the screen as at the realisation that the hand holding it was attached to his ten-year-old self.

“Why did you do it, Stani? Did you really think we’d never get out?” The face behind the mask laughed mirthlessly and the hand pulled the trigger. Stanislaw felt his mind and body dissolve away.

Here we go, a new ping-pong painting ! I'm mashing art with Matthew Watkins, and the writer Paul Jarvis is following us with a fantastic story... We started with Matthew's masterpiece just below (brushes on iPad):

Stanislaw had a box for everything

"The first one had been the hardest. He’d been young then, of course, but the memories of trying to hold that lid on were still every bit as real as the smell of freshly cut cardboard in the operating theatre. Sometimes at night, amid the muffled hubbub from the rowdier prisoners in the upper boxes, it seemed to Stanislaw that he could make out the higher pitch of that first victim’s squeal.

At the moment, however, the office was unnaturally hushed. And that was not all. No sooner had he emerged from the theatre than Stanislaw saw that his desk was not as it should be: the boxing schedules and progress reports were no longer in their neat rectangular pile, but scattered haphazardly here and there, while three of the “souvenir” pigeon holes were darkly empty.

Stanislaw laid down his surgical towel and plunged into deep reflection. Of a sudden, his ears pricked up. The sound was unmistakable. One of the boxes was open".

I replied with that painting:

He even had a box for him, too. But this one was top-secret.

And Paul answered:

“One of the boxes is open.” The thought raced back and forthunchecked like a crazed moth across the uncluttered whiteness of Stanislaw’s middle-mind. Seconds, perhaps minutes, passed before – as the good psychiatrist had assured him it always would – the darkness of reason began to exert its calming effect on this latest mental intruder.

“Impossible,” he told himself. “The vacuum-locking system CANNOT fail.” Clutching the table, he blink-breathed to a countof thirty, then straightened up, relief exploding magically in his belly. “Unless…”

Panic-stricken now, Stanislaw pulled the table aside, fell to his knees and wrenched open the door to his Box Chamber. The bad psychiatrist had once punched him so hard in the solar plexus that he had felt like he was drowning in air. This was worse: the hands on the pressure gauge were swinging dangerously towards the vertical, the blue safety lights at the back of the Chamber were out, and there was no sign of life. He felt the hair he no longer had prickle terrified on his head, but there was nothing else for it. Stanislaw slid forward into the dark stillness.

A large part of the stuff I showed for Emile Cohl oral examination. (click to enlarge)

Techniques (plus ou moins dans l'ordre): acrylique, gouache, crayon blanc/noir, aquarelle, crayon, feutre, stylo bille noir pour tous les croquis + aquarelle/feutre pour certains, doigt+brushes+iPod touch.

Tous les dessins sont réalisés d'observation directe sauf le serpent et le verre sur ipod (d'après photos).

Tools used: acrylics, gouache, black/white pencil, watercolor, pencil, felt-pen, ballpoint pen for all the sketches, right index finger + brushes + iPod touch.

Every work is made directly from life, apart from the snake & the glass on ipod which are from photo reference.

J'espère que ça vous plaît, j'ai jamais passé autant de temps à organiser une page de blog !

Mashing art with 7-years old

Once again a fun collaborative project with the mobile artist Fabric Lenny. We mashed art with 7-years old children ! They're based in Hoyland (US), and sent drawings for us to paint over last week. Very great works out of it !

Encore un projet fun proposé par Fabric Lenny ! Les élèves d'une classe à Hoyland (US) nous ont envoyé des dessins, qu'on a du transformer à notre façon. J'ai ajouté quelques éléments au croquis de l'enfant -trop drôle de dessiner comme un enfant!-(cf GIF) et fait une petite vidéo avec.

Première séance de nus! C'est pas la peine que je poste les croquis pour les poses de 1 et 2 min (un désastre, le modèle en a profité pour faire les trucs les plus tordus). Ceux là sont tous faits en 10 ou 15 min.

Bon ça faisait un bout de temps que j'avais pas posté grand chose, je vais essayer de compenser pendant ces vacs! (enfin!) Pas mal de trucs du genre des croquis du dessus devraient suivre.

Well, it's been a while I didn't post any stuff, I'll try to balance now since I'm now (at last!) on 2-weeks holidays ! More doodle like the ones above might follow.

Voilà aussi quelques croquis d'observation (en dessous), faits surplace lors d'une petite excursion au parc de la Tête d'Or à Lyon.

Here (underneath) are also some sketches from life, made at the Parc de la Tête d'Or. It's tough to catch a pose that last 10 seconds for more!

Sinon, le lapin d'à coté est mon premier test avec la tablette. Et je dois dire que Paint est vraiment un outil superpuissant. Vivement Photoshop!
Finally, this bunny is my first try with the Wacom. And I must say Paint is truly super-powerful. I can't wait to get Photoshop !

I won the Minigore Monster Contest !

The goal was to design a monster for the game Minigore, I chose to create that deceitful Granny Gore -a kind of Grandma very fond of clovers. Hope you like it, as the guys from Minigore !

Above is my submission for a great collaborative project, the Fabric Lenny Land Extravaganza Circus, managed by Fabric Lanny himself. He asked a bunch of fingerpainters to paint and share a circus performer, to be grouped together in this blog. Then to be mixed together to create a huge work of art !

Fabric Lenny is an awesome artist, I recommend his website -many crazy works are to be found there.

Animation Creator on iPad

Just dicovered this great app ! It allows to make, frame by frame, short animations. A super nice tool, which only lacks something to add music to the animation. A must try !

Here's my first serious try: the background is made on brushes, and the animation is composed of about 40 frames painted one by one with the animation creator.

They're back again !

I tried to only use the hard edged brush, set to the higher opacity. And to choose the colors as right as possible !

J'ai utilisé le pinceau le plus opaque, sans revenir sur les couleurs un maximum. En essayant de les poser aussi justes que possible !

Une petite page de dés pour commencer ! Je vais essayer de faire une présentation qui ressemble avec celles qui vont suivre, que ça soit un peu plus "esthetique" que les croquis simples.

Pour ceux qui connaissent pas encore, le principe est simple: chaque dessin représente un mot du type "dé-xxx", où "xxx" est un mot qui qualifie le dé. Par exemple, les dés en haut à droite sont associés au mot "désarmés" (des dés armés). D'ailleurs, si quelqu'un a des suggestions de "dé-xxx" intéressantes je prends, c'est toujours sympa à dessiner !

Fot those who still don't know the game: each sketch represents a french word of the kind 'dé-xxx' (where dé means dice, and 'xxx' qualifies the dice). For example, the right-top corner dices are related to the word 'désarmés', where 'armés' means 'armed'. Btw, I'm open to any word suggestions to draw!

A Fantastic World

The Living Tales seem to be the oldest inhabitants of this world. By the time, they accumulated a tremendous amount of knowledge, which they jealously protect. Indeed, no one is able to access this precious treasure, apart from a couple of children at the early age, privileged. These mysterious creatures live on thoughts and emotions, which they create through numerous touching tales.

The Birdie is key here. He's present at every significant event, and never misses a chance to relate you this or that short story. Be kind with him, it's worth it. Although that cute tiny creature does not look up to much, he's omnipotent ! And there's no secret for him...

In his youth he grows among the young birdies of his age, and then stands on his own two feet, alone.

Bunnies are inevitable. You can't miss them here, they're everywhere. Of all kinds, of all height, they reign over this world. Very peaceful, they're without a doubt among the most clever creatures out there.

They mostly live on vegetables, but have a preference for carrots, which they particularely like well roasted.

Carrots are one of the numerous strangeness that lurks in the woods. They're endowed with an astonishing mimicry ability. Be careful of them! Usually, they just look like simple flying vegetables, innocuous, but sometimes they suddenly turn into huge glowing creatures...

Here is my contribution to Fabric Lenny's project : Hyppos in Leeds. He invited us (me & some other fingerpainters) to participate in a mini project where each would have to make an hippo painting (using brushes), to be shown as postcard size images at the upcoming West Leeds festival (UK). So there I did !

By the way, Fabric Lenny's iphone artwork is absolutely awesome, you just HAVE to take a glance on it !

I needed to draw some trees for an artclass project. So I took away my camping chair, left for the nearby forest and sat from a nice tree to another... Here's the result ! Such a great fun to sketch from life :D

Each took 45 min on average, apart from the third that was much longer (all these leaves, aah...). Probably some more to come in the next few days !

Some medals for a super fingerpainter

In tribute to Susan Murtaugh, whose style and talent are more than genius.
I tried here to approach her painting style (mostly in the background), but I admit I didn't succeed in ! Next time I'll only use Sketchbook instead, it seems really more appropriate to make those "multiple lines" that are in the background.

I fingerpainted these for an artclass project. The theme was "play on ego", and I chose here to play between the Artist's personnality and the Chemist's one. That also represents my personnality, and my current hesitation upon my future studies choice -scientist or artist?

The first snow

By nightfall, this lonely streetlight was mysteriously glowing through the first snow. I tried to catch this fabulous scene.

About 6 hours, fingerpainting, sitting on the windowsill. It's hard to paint from life :D!
